Registration process

How to register with AHPRA

  1. 1

    Meet the English requirement

IELTS Academic 7.0 in each band, OET grade B in each sub-test, or PTE Academic 65 in each skill — combinable across two sittings within six months under NMBA rules. GNF Career Pathways prepares you for whichever test suits you best.

  2. 2

    Self-check your qualification

The NMBA assesses internationally qualified nurses against Australian standards. Your programme’s theory and clinical hours, and current home-country registration, determine your assessment stream.

  3. 3

    Apply to AHPRA / NMBA

Submit your registration application with certified qualifications, registration history, identity and English evidence. The NMBA responds with your assessment outcome and required next steps.

  4. 4

Complete the Outcomes-Based Assessment (if directed)

Many IQNs sit a cognitive multiple-choice exam (NCLEX-style) followed by an OSCE-style clinical assessment. GNF’s NCLEX-prep foundation transfers directly to the cognitive component.

  5. 5

    ANMAC skills assessment (for migration)

For points-based visas (189/190) and many sponsored routes, ANMAC independently assesses your qualification and experience. GNF prepares the file so NMBA and ANMAC tracks run in parallel.

  6. 6

    Secure your employer and visa

Interview with Australian hospitals and aged-care providers — GNF arranges this at zero cost. Employer-sponsored 482/186 or points-based 189/190; nursing sits on the priority occupation lists.

  7. 7

    Register and relocate

With NMBA registration granted and your visa issued, you practise as an Australian RN — with award salaries, superannuation and a clear PR pathway. GNF supports relocation and family visas.

Frequently asked

About AHPRA registration

What is AHPRA?
The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) administers registration for health professionals in Australia. Nurses register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) through AHPRA. You must hold NMBA registration before practising as a Registered Nurse anywhere in Australia.
What English scores does the NMBA require?
IELTS Academic with a minimum of 7.0 in each band, OET with a minimum grade B in each sub-test, or PTE Academic with a minimum of 65 in each communicative skill. Scores can usually be combined across two sittings within six months under NMBA rules. GNF Career Pathways runs IELTS, OET and PTE preparation.
What is ANMAC and do I need it?
The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) performs the skills assessment used for skilled-migration visas. If you are pursuing a points-based visa (subclass 189/190) or many employer-sponsored routes, you need a positive ANMAC assessment of your qualification and experience alongside your NMBA registration.
Do internationally qualified nurses sit an exam for Australia?
Many do. Depending on how the NMBA assesses your qualification, you may be directed to the Outcomes-Based Assessment: a multiple-choice cognitive exam (NCLEX-style) plus an OSCE-style clinical assessment, or a bridging program. Nurses educated in certain comparable systems may have a shorter route.
Which visa do nurses use for Australia?
Common routes: subclass 482 (Temporary Skill Shortage) sponsored by an employer, subclass 186 (Employer Nomination — permanent), and subclass 189/190 (Skilled Independent / State Nominated — points-based, permanent). Nursing is consistently on Australia’s priority skilled occupation lists.
How long does the Australia pathway take?
Typically 9-18 months end to end: English test, NMBA application and assessment (which may include the Outcomes-Based Assessment), then visa processing (4-12 months depending on subclass). GNF sequences the stages so they overlap where possible.
Does Global Nurse Force charge for Australia placement?
No — zero-cost placement applies to every GNF destination. We support English preparation, NMBA/ANMAC applications, employer matching, visa and relocation without placement fees to the candidate.
